A bizarre confectionery crime has unfolded in Europe, where thieves made off with more than 12 tonnes of KitKat chocolate bars in what authorities are calling one of the most unusual cargo heists of the year.

The shipment—containing approximately 413,000 bars—was en route from a factory in central Italy to distribution centres in Poland when the truck transporting the goods disappeared.

Investigators believe the theft occurred during transit, though the exact location remains unclear, and both the vehicle and its sugary cargo are still missing.

Authorities have warned that the chocolate could surface through unofficial sales channels across Europe, particularly in the lead-up to the Easter period when demand for sweets typically spikes.

Nestlé, the Swiss multinational behind the popular wafer bar, confirmed it is working with law enforcement and supply chain partners to investigate the incident.

The company also noted that each bar carries a unique batch code, allowing stolen items to be traced if they re-enter the market.

While no injuries were reported, the heist highlights a growing trend in cargo theft targeting fast-moving consumer goods, which are often easier to resell and less tightly secured than high-value electronics.

For now, the case remains unsolved—leaving police, retailers, and chocolate lovers alike asking: where did all the KitKats go?
