Broadway Bakery is a third-generation, fully owned family business in Kenya, producing bread, wheat flour and baked goods for more than 66 years. Broadway Bakery is part of the Broadway Group of Companies, which also includes Bakex Millers Ltd whose products are all Superbrands as well.

The Broadway Groupʼs origins trace back to 1958, when the founding generation opened a one-deck oven bakery in their hometown of Thika. Over time, their business expanded, and by the late 1970s, a major expansion began with the installation of the first Baker Perkins bread plant with a capacity of 70,000 loaves per day. In 1985, the first Werner & Pfleiderer bread plant was installed, with a capacity of 100,000 loaves per day, followed by a second W&P plant in 1992.

In the year 2000, with the founding generation retiring, the next generation took over the reins. The business has since continued to meet with great success, expanding in 2017 with a third W&P bread plant.

With three generations of their family members involved in the company, Broadway Bakery prides itself in only creating baked products that they would feed to their own family. The companyʼs main products include White and Brown Bread, offered both Sliced and Unsliced in various sizes; and White and Brown Sliced Sandwich bread.

In 2019, Broadway Bakery entered the snacks market with the introduction of ready-to-eat Mando Bites Mandazis and Maicho Donuts. This move allowed the company to venture into a new segment of the market.

Introduced in 2021, 50/50 Sandwich Bread, contains a mixture of white and brown flour in every slice, designed to provide the delicious taste of white bread while incorporating the nutritional benefits of brown bread.

Broadway Bakery has continued to expand in recent years, commissioning two new state-of-the-art, fully automated bread production lines from Royal Kaak in 2021 and again in 2023.

To give back to the community, the Broadway Group initiated the ʻʼBe Sugar Smartʼʼ campaign in 2017, bringing awareness of the dangers of consuming too much added sugar and providing free diabetes screenings. The Group also has been providing students with placements to develop their skills within the Groupʼs companies and sponsors bright students for higher education they could not otherwise afford through their ʻʼEducation Support Programʼʼ.

Broadway Bakery was voted ʻʼThe Best Bread Brand of the Yearʼʼ at the Consumer FMCG Awards 2023-2024. In 2023, the company was recognized for “New Project of the Year” for their new bakery line and “Community Impact Initiative” for their #BeSugarSmart campaign at the Africa Food Industry Excellence Awards 2023; and “Third Most Chosen FMCG Brand” by the Kantar Kenyan Brand Footprint 2023.
